Thermalright MUX-120 - Processor heatsink - ( Socket 1156 ) - aluminum - 120 mm

Thermalright MUX-120 - Processor heatsink - ( Socket 1156 ) - aluminum - 120 mm Reviews

I've been waiting for a good offering of socket 1156 HSF options and this Thermalright MUX-120 delivers. I bought this HSF to use with my Intel Core i7 860 CPU (non-overclocked). I was previously using the Intel stock heatsink and fan which left a lot to be desired in both performance and noise.br /br /The original Intel HSF gave me idle temperatures between 35-40 degrees Celsius and 100% load temperatures 80-82 degrees Celsius which is very high.br /br /After installing the Thermalright MUX-120 with some Artic silver thermal paste, my idle temperatures dropped to 20-22 degrees Celsius and 100% load temperatures of 50-55 degrees Celsius.br /br /The MUX-120 is also much quieter than the stock Intel HSF with a constant speed 120mm fan running at roughly 1200RPM. I cannot hear the fan from the MUX-120 from outside of my Antec P183 case.br /br /The MUX-120 came well package and with a clear instruction manual. The installation was easy, although it does require extra time for the removal of the motherboard if your case does not have access from behind the socket because a metal back plate is required for a stable installation.br /br /The MUX-120 weighs a decent amount, but it fits well and doesn't bend/lean once the case is setup correctly. I would highly recommend this to anyone with a socket 1156 who wants a well-performing HSF with very little sound. If you plan to overclock your CPU it may work well for limited overclocking, but you might need a faster fan to provide better cooling if you overclock aggressively.

Great Product - B. Williams -
In the review on Toms Hardware they said this unit came in #2 out of like 15 coolers when a higher output fan was used. I removed the 1200rpm fan and put on a 2000rpm fan and now have my i5-750 overclocked from 2.66ghz to 4.01 ghz with load temps at 62c. This cooler beat out 70-90 dollar coolers, what a value.

I built a computer by using the suggestions from [...] with wonderful success. This is one of the products Rob Williams recommended and I was not disappointed! I managed to get a Microsoft of 7.5 on that scale that runs from 1 to 7.9 for every test except the hard drive which got a 5.9. I think I should have gotten the SATA 6 drive.br /br /note: I did not much like the cooling fan that came with this package. I installed it just as the instruction recommended but I had trouble keeping the CPU temperature below 60 degrees Celsius. I bought a little bigger and better heat sink with more contact surface area on the CPU and now it operates around the 30 - 40 range. However, even now when I hit it hard with multiple CPU intensive processes it will take short trips above the 60 degree level. If you plan to stress this CPU to its limits you should search for appropriate cooling options.

Look at the Price - A. Aguilar - NYC
Ok, I just bought this processor from Micro Center in Long Island, NY for 9 (10-26-2010). I haven't even built the machine yet, but I jumped at the i7-870 just because it was so cheap. I'll update this later when I have the rest of the parts. br /br /Hope I could save you a few bucks.
